Overbrook Pointe Hosts Speaker Series Event on the History of North Park

As part of Overbrook Pointe’s ongoing Speaker Series, residents from the St. John Community and prospective residents gathered for an informative presentation on the “History of North Park”. Presented by Allegheny County Parks Rangers Deaglan McManus and Thomas Shields, the event attracted 44 curious attendees eager to learn more about one of Pittsburgh’s most cherished outdoor spaces.

Guests were treated to drinks and snacks such as Trail mix and granola that perfectly complemented the nature-themed discussion.

North Park, one of the nine Allegheny County parks, has a rich history. Established in 1927, it holds the unique title of being the oldest of the parks—by just a few hours. On February 11th of that year, the Allegheny County Commissioners passed a resolution in the morning to create North Park, followed by the establishment of South Park that same evening. The creation of these parks was part of a larger vision spearheaded by County Commissioner and lumber magnate E.B. Babcock. His goal was to create “people’s country clubs,” preserving natural spaces for the enjoyment of future generations.

After sharing the park’s history, the rangers chatted with attendees, answering questions and delving deeper into North Park’s past. Their personal interactions and wealth of knowledge made the event even more memorable for those in attendance.

“We are so grateful to Rangers McManus and Shields for their presentation,” said Ashley Treadway, St. John Community Regional Marketing Manager. “The presentation was full of fascinating stories and little-known facts, and it was fascinating to learn about North Park’s history and the vision behind its creation. Our residents and guests had nothing but positive things to say and we can’t wait to explore more of our local history in future Speaker Series events.”

Don’t miss the next Speaker Series event at Overbrook Pointe, “Pittsburgh Food and Its Impact on Culture,” on September 10th. Call (724) 625 – 4857 to RSVP.
